Essential Oils for Colds

Updated: Aug 31, 2018

The seasons are changing. It's not uncommon to get the sniffles during this phase of transition. Luckily, we have our essential oil on our side to help ease with the transition. Read on to find out what our main 3 oils blends are for respiratory, immune system support and fever.

I know a few moms who have shown concern in using essential oils with their kids. Mostly probably because we don't know where to start. First of all, I can't express enough the importance of using 100% pure AND therapeutic essential oils. Many people are blinded by the organic labels. It must be organic, but when it comes to essential oils, what's really relevant, is the source of the oil as well as the therapeutic value. An oil can be organic, but not therapeutic - huge difference. Pure essential oils are 100% natural products. It's an ancient ritual. For this reason it can't be patented, meaning pharmaceutical companies can't make money with it.

General medicine creates more acid within the body, which can lead to side-effects. If anything, use essential oils alongside your other methods, may it be general medicine or homeopathic granules. The main positive feature of essential oils is that it leaves absolutely no toxins behind. Something I think we all put importance on when it comes to the building immune systems of our little ones.

Ever since integrating essential oils into our lives, I started making rollerball blends for my kids, instead of always blending the oils anew in my hand before applying. The rollerballs are so practical to use! Like this I can easily take off the top and roll on the oil blend over the concerned area. My kids love how it tickles when I apply it over their spine or on the bottom of the feet. They're always highly fascinated with mommy's oils.

What are blends?

An oil blend is a mix of different essential oils diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut oil. The carrier oil helps the skin to absorb the essential oils better. It also alleviates any skin irritation. There are different dilution ratios depending who the blend is for. Obviously, for babies and small children the essential oils are highly diluted, considering their gentle skin.

All my blends I have from books of women who have studied the subject on hand thoroughly. Also all blends have been tested on myself and my kids without any complications whatsoever.

At the first sign of sickness, I always diffuse our air with essential oils in particular the following blend:

Immune System Support Blend

As from 3 months

5 drops frankincense

5 drops lemon

5 drops oregano

5 drops On Guard (the protection blend)

5 drops melaleuca

Directions: Apply oils in the diffuser and let it run until empty. This blend will clear the air of harmful bacteria, viruses and any other environmental threat.

I use the baby respiratory blend when the respiratory system is clogged up and for cough. I also apply it on their chest, when their sniffles has evolved to cough and down their spine for some extra healing support.

Baby Respiratory Blend

For 3 months to 2 years old

1 drop cardamom

1 drop frankincense

1 drop wild orange

Fractionated coconut oil

Place the essential oils in a 10-milliliter rollerball bottle and then fill to the top with the coconut oil. Roll the blend over bottoms of feet for respiratory support.
